The Trump administration is promoting former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán for the role of United Nations Secretary-General. The move relies on a specific diplomatic strategy. US officials believe they can secure the backing of Russia and China for Orbán. This creates a united front in the Security Council. The goal is to make Orbán their joint candidate.

A State Department official acknowledged that the proposal appears unusual at first glance. However, previous discussions suggest Moscow and Beijing are supportive of the idea. Officials from the US and another country noted that when Washington, Moscow, and Beijing align on a goal, they typically achieve it. This historical pattern drives the current push.

One State Department representative estimated the vote count. They counted eight votes in the Security Council that would support Orbán comfortably. Another ten votes out of the 15 members could potentially be secured. An American official described Orbán as the dream MAGA-conservative candidate. This label stems from his actions against mass migration, liberal NGOs, and left-leaning courts and press.

US officials contacted Orbán to gauge his interest. He was positively inclined, though he attached caveats to his participation. If he formally declares his candidacy, President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance are expected to support him. According to a source familiar with the process, the announcement is being held back until after the US midterm elections.

A representative from another country described the other candidates as heavy on the secretary aspect. They have experience in international bureaucracy and behind-the-scenes diplomacy. Orbán, by contrast, would be a general. A State Department representative agreed with this assessment. They stated that Orbán adheres to the correct ideology and knows how to exercise power under hostile conditions without being intimidated by the establishment.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez recently stressed the need to reform the UN and strengthen accountability mechanisms. He cited the need to stop governments that undermine international rules. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has long called for removing the veto power in the Security Council. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul criticized the council in spring for its inability to make decisions due to vetoes.
